From Cleveland, take Highway 75 north towards Helen for seven miles, turn right on Georgia 17. We are 1.3 miles east on the left. From Helen, go south on highway 75 for two miles. Turn left on highway 17 and go 1.3 miles. Church is on the left.

The above painting of Nacoochee Valley shows Nacoochee United Methodist church and cemetery during the period of 1943-1963. The original painting was done by local artist John Kollock for Nacoochee United Methodist Church. Numbered and re-signed prints are available in the church office.

 Welcome to Nacoochee UMC!

We are excited that you stopped by to see how God is working here at Nacoochee United Methodist Church.  We strive to be a loving, friendly community church that reaches out to our neighbors with Jesus’ love and hope you feel right at home here in the Nacoochee Valley with us.

Jesus has modeled for us that life’s meaning is discovered primarily through a relationship with the God who made us and deeply loves us.  This relationship is best experienced through following and receiving God’s son, Jesus, and His Holy Spirit.  We are striving to grow as faithful followers of Jesus who love God greatly and love others compassionately.

We would love for you to join us in worship every Sunday.  The modern praise service begins at 8:45 a.m., and the casual traditional service begins at 11 a.m.  You are invited to stay for Sunday school for all ages at 9:55 a.m. and find out more about how you can experience a more meaningful life by following Jesus Christ.

Whatever you do, know that we are praying for you and your family to find a faith community where you can discover the love God has for you and the peace He longs to give you.

In His grace,

Pastor Chris Shurtz
and the Family of Nacoochee UMC

Our History

The first white settlers arrived in Nacoochee Valley in 1822 and purchased land from the Indians. Twelve years later in 1834, six acres of that land were deeded to the trustees of Nacoochee Methodist Church for a church building and cemetery. The church building was completed in 1836 and stood for over 100 years until it was destroyed by fire on the first Sunday of May in 1943. The very next morning, before the ashes had cooled, men and mules were busy clearing away the debris. A new red brick sanctuary was completed that same year.

A growing church seldom has enough space, so in 1963 a new Sunday School facility was dedicated. Then in the fall of 2000, ground was broken for a new fellowship hall and educational facility. And we're not finished yet! Plans are already underway to enlarge our sanctuary to nearly double our present seating capacity.

Come grow with us, worship with us, fellowship with us.
